As we approach the start of a new homeschooling year in 2024, I find myself reflecting on what I hope my November self will understand about the journey ahead. The first day of homeschooling is a milestone filled with excitement, anticipation, and a touch of uncertainty for some of us. Here’s a little pep talk for my future self, as well as for anyone embarking on this adventure for the first time.
1. Embrace the Learning Curve
November me, remember that the first day is just the beginning of a beautiful adventure. It’s okay if everything doesn’t go perfectly, or if your house doesn’t smell like fancy pancakes and chocolate chips. Your kids will still love waking up and enjoy this learning process with you. There will be adjustments to make, routines to establish, and unexpected surprises along the way. Embrace the learning curve with an open mind and a sense of humor.
2. Celebrate the Small Wins
Your first day will likely be filled with small victories, from successfully navigating a new schedule to seeing your child’s excitement about their new curriculum and lessons. Take time to celebrate these moments, no matter how minor they may seem. You can even go to a fun spot for lunch, maybe the park? These small wins will build your confidence and set a positive tone for the months ahead. It also won’t overwhelm you to keep up with a strict routine where you can’t find a little flexibility, because that’s the whole point, am I right?
3. Be Kind to Yourself
It’s easy to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to get everything “right” from the start. Especially taking notes and observations on what our kids need, maybe even overwhelming a teacher planner for the year, or making sure we are put together before we start the day. But remember, homeschooling is a journey, not a sprint. Be kind to yourself and recognize that mistakes are part of the process. What matters most is your dedication and willingness to adapt as you go. And it is okay to drop a curriculum that you feel isn’t working for your family, you are not a failure.
4. Foster a Love for Learning
The first days set the stage for your child’s learning experience. Focus on creating an environment where curiosity is encouraged and learning is fun. Whether it’s through engaging activities, interactive lessons, or simply spending quality time together, aim to instill a love for learning that will carry through the year. This is what will help them in the future when they decide to go for that engineering degree or become a small business owner. It is the love of learning that makes our kids stand out from the rest. Because then they can learn ANYTHING.
5. Communicate Openly
Keep communication lines open with your child. Their feedback is super important in your homeschooling experience. Sometimes what we had planned did not work at all, so we just have to drop it and find a different alternative. This makes it enjoyable for everyone at home.
6. Reflect and Adjust
As you move through November and beyond, take time to reflect on what’s working and what could be improved. Flexibility is one of the greatest strengths of homeschooling. Be willing to tweak your approach based on your observations and your child’s needs. I stick to my 1 month plan rule. I only plan 1 month ahead of the month we are currently on, in terms of curriculum, to keep my flexible plans adjustable.

7. Trust the Process
Above all, trust that you are capable and that you have everything you need to make this a successful year. You’ve chosen this path with intention and care, and that commitment is what will drive your success. Believe in yourself and in the process, and remember that you are making a significant impact on your child’s education. Good job mama! You are doing it, you are making the difference in your family and you will see the rewards from it.
As we embark on this homeschooling journey, let’s hold onto these reflections and carry them with us through our first day and beyond. Here’s to a wonderful and fulfilling homeschooling experience this year! You got this!
Best of luck,
